Lake Ontario's legendary salmon and trout runs bring anglers from all over the region, and Captain Justin at Over The Rail Sportfishing knows exactly where to find them. This 4-hour charter puts you right in the heart of one of the Great Lakes' most productive fisheries, where trophy kings, feisty steelhead, and hard-fighting lake trout cruise the deep, cold waters year-round. With all gear included and a captain who's been working these waters for years, you'll spend your time fighting fish instead of figuring out tackle. Just bring your Ontario fishing license, pack some snacks and drinks, and get ready for some serious rod-bending action.
Captain Justin runs a tight ship with room for up to 4 anglers, making this the perfect trip for families, couples, or a small group of friends who want personalized attention on the water. You'll launch from one of Lake Ontario's premier ports and head out to where the thermocline holds the best concentrations of salmon and trout. The boat's equipped with all the downriggers, planer boards, and electronics you need to locate schools and present lures at the right depths. Don't worry if you've never fished the Great Lakes before – Justin takes time to explain the setup and techniques, so everyone from beginners to seasoned pros can get in on the action. Even Cooper, the four-legged first mate, helps keep the mood light and entertaining throughout the trip.
Lake Ontario trolling is all about covering water efficiently while keeping your baits in the strike zone. Captain Justin runs a full spread of downriggers and planer boards to maximize your chances, adjusting depths and speeds based on water temperature, time of year, and fish behavior. You'll work with everything from spoons and plugs to cut bait, depending on what the fish are hitting. The captain handles all the technical stuff – setting lines, adjusting drag, and coaching you through the fight once a fish hits. Lake Ontario's deep, clear water means fish can be anywhere from 20 to 200 feet down, so having the right electronics and someone who knows how to read them makes all the difference between a good day and a great day.
"Was a very good trip always like fishing with justin. Was a crappy day and we still pulled it off.will ne back in the fall." - victor. "I don't think there's words to say how great of a trip we had. Once we started gearing up to fish, we were on fish. Cap. Justin was very knowledgeable with the area, how and where we needed our lures, and most importantly how to not lose a fish. We will definitely be coming back for future trips. This was our first trip on Lake Ontario and I feel the best we could ever have." - Brian. "Captain Justin at Over the Rail was absolutely outstanding! We were a party of 5 adults and Justin worked tirelessly for 8 hours straight to make sure we had the best Salmon fishing trip ever. From the first minute to the last, Justin worked at keeping the rigs loaded, changed lures and bait as needed, monitored our location to find the best spots for fish and gave us non stop narrative and information that was both informative and helpful. We ended up landing 2 HUGE King Salmon, a huge Steelhead, and 5 medium King Salmon!!!" - vikki
Coho Salmon are the acrobats of Lake Ontario, known for their spectacular jumps and lightning-fast runs when hooked. These silver bullets typically range from 5 to 15 pounds and are most active during the cooler months of spring and fall. Cohos love to feed in the top 50 feet of water, making them prime targets for planer board presentations. When you hook into one, expect multiple jumps and screaming runs that'll test your drag settings. Their firm, pink meat makes them a favorite for the dinner table too.
Steelhead Trout are pure power wrapped in chrome, averaging 8 to 20 pounds with some monsters pushing 30-plus. These Lake Ontario natives are available year-round but really turn on during spring and fall migrations. Steelhead have incredible stamina and will make long, determined runs that can strip line off your reel in seconds. They're known for their unpredictable fighting style – one minute bulldogging deep, the next launching themselves clear out of the water. The meat is excellent, with a rich flavor that's perfect grilled or smoked.
Chinook Salmon, the kings of Lake Ontario, are what most anglers dream about. These bruisers commonly reach 20 to 30 pounds, with trophy fish over 40 pounds caught every season. Kings are most active during late spring through early fall, when they move into shallower water to feed on baitfish. When a chinook hits, you'll know it – they make powerful, deep runs and use their weight to their advantage. Fighting a big king on Lake Ontario's open water is a battle you won't forget, and the thick, rich fillets are the ultimate reward.
Brown Trout are the craftiest fish in Lake Ontario, known for their wariness and selective feeding habits. These beauties typically run 5 to 15 pounds but can grow much larger, with their golden-bronze coloration making them one of the most beautiful fish in the lake. Browns are most active during low-light periods and cooler water temperatures, often holding tight to structure or temperature breaks. They're notorious for making long runs when hooked and have a habit of jumping unexpectedly. The delicate, flaky meat has an excellent flavor that many consider the best-eating trout in the Great Lakes.
Lake Trout are the deep-water specialists, living in Lake Ontario's coldest, deepest zones year-round. These native char can live for decades and commonly reach 10 to

My 8year old Grandson and I had a wonderful and successful fishing trip with Captain Justin. Captain Justin explained everything in detail for my Grandson. He talked to him about the species of fish, how to rig the lines, different speeds and water temperatures to catch different species of fish. We limited out on Lake Trout and had 2 salmon in the boat in just under 4 hours. My Grandson's arms got tire of reeling in fish, so we cut our trip a little short. My Grandson was so excited that we came home and have booked another trip with Captain Justin for later this season. His deck hand Cooper(dog) is great with kids. My Grandson and I highly recommend Captain Justin and Over the Rail Sportfishing. Thank you again Captain Justin. Mark & Victor

Let me just say that the waves were choppy and both My Husband and I got motion sickness(bummer, we forgot to take meds for it!) But of course that wasn’t Captain Justin’s fault. He was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. We felt comfortable and right at home! We will definitely be coming back for more and we refuse to be out there with anyone else! Thank you Captain Justin👍

Brown trout are the smart ones - wary, selective, and built for the long game with lifespans reaching 12+ years. These golden-brown beauties average 8-24 inches with distinctive black spots and that small reddish adipose fin. In Lake Ontario, we find them relating to structure in 30-100 feet, especially around drop-offs and rocky areas where they ambush prey. Fall fishing is outstanding when they feed aggressively before winter, though spring can be hot too. What makes browns special is their wariness - they're tough to fool but fight hard once hooked. The meat is excellent with a mild, sweet flavor. They prefer cooler water temps between 54-65°F, so we adjust depths seasonally. Here's the trick: browns often follow lures for long distances before striking, so don't change direction too quickly when turning - let them make up their minds.

King salmon are the heavyweights of Lake Ontario, averaging 15-20 pounds but pushing 30+ when conditions are right. These silver-sided bruisers have blue-green backs covered in black spots and that telltale black mouth. Being light-sensitive, they hug the bottom during bright days, so we target them in 80-200 feet of water using downriggers. Spring through early summer offers the best action when they're feeding heavily on alewives. What makes kings special is their raw power - no jumping, just bulldogging runs that test your drag and your patience. The reddish-pink meat is prime table fare. Early morning and late evening produce the most bites when they move up to feed. My go-to tip: when you feel that heavy weight and slow headshakes, keep steady pressure and be patient - these fish don't give up easy.

Coho salmon, also called silvers, are some of the most acrobatic fighters you'll find in Lake Ontario. These beauties average 8-12 pounds with their distinctive dark blue-green backs and silver sides covered in black spots. What makes them special is their jumping ability - they can leap up to 6 feet out of the water when hooked. We typically find them in 40-120 feet of water during spring and fall runs, often suspended mid-column chasing baitfish. The meat has that bright orange-red color that makes for great eating. Best fishing happens during low-light conditions - early morning or evening when they're actively feeding. Pro tip: when trolling spoons, vary your speed every few minutes. Coho love that erratic action and it triggers more strikes than steady trolling.

Lakers are the deep-water giants of the trout family, with their grey-green bodies and cream-colored markings making them easy to identify. These char family members average 24-36 inches and can hit 40+ pounds in Lake Ontario's cold, deep water. We target them in 100-300+ feet year-round since they need that cold, oxygen-rich environment. Spring right after ice-out and fall are peak times when they move shallower. What guests love is the steady, powerful fight and the challenge of deep-water fishing. The meat is firm and flaky - great eating. Lakers suspend mid-column or hug bottom, often following schools of baitfish. Jigging is deadly effective, but here's my secret: when jigging, pause for 3-5 seconds every few pumps. That's when most strikes happen - on the pause when the lure looks wounded.

Steelhead are basically rainbow trout that decided to live large in the Great Lakes. These silver rockets average 24 inches but can push 45 inches and really know how to use that streamlined body when they're hooked. Unlike their smaller rainbow cousins, steelhead have that distinctive brassy-silver color with black spots scattered across their backs. We find them cruising anywhere from 20-80 feet deep, usually near drop-offs and temperature breaks. Spring and fall are prime time when water temps hit their sweet spot. What guests love most is the fight - these fish make long runs and jump like they're trying to fly. The meat is top-notch eating too. Here's a tip from years of guiding: when you hook one, keep steady pressure but don't horse them. Let them run and tire themselves out.
