"I don't think there's words to say how great of a trip we had. Once we started gearing up to fish, we were on fish. Cap. Justin was very knowledgeable with the area, how and where we needed our lures, and most importantly how to not lose a fish. We will definitely be coming back for future trips. This was our first trip on Lake Ontario and I feel the best we could ever have." - Brian
"Captain Justin at Over the Rail was absolutely outstanding! We were a party of 5 adults and Justin worked tirelessly for 8 hours straight to make sure we had the best Salmon fishing trip ever. From the first minute to the last, Justin worked at keeping the rigs loaded, changed lures and bait as needed, monitored our location to find the best spots for fish and gave us non stop narrative and information that was both informative and helpful. We ended up landing 2 HUGE King Salmon, a huge Steelhead, and 5 medium King Salmon!!! We had the best take of the day and brought home a big cooler full of deliciousness. Justin runs a great, one man operation and we would highly recommend him for your trip." - vikki
"My 8year old Grandson and I had a wonderful and successful fishing trip with Captain Justin. Captain Justin explained everything in detail for my Grandson. He talked to him about the species of fish, how to rig the lines, different speeds and water temperatures to catch different species of fish. We limited out on Lake Trout and had 2 salmon in the boat in just under 4 hours. My Grandson's arms got tire of reeling in fish, so we cut our trip a little short. My Grandson was so excited that we came home and have booked another trip with Captain Justin for later this season. His deck hand Cooper(dog) is great with kids. My Grandson and I highly recommend Captain Justin and Over the Rail Sportfishing. Thank you again Captain Justin. Mark & Victor" - Mark
Coho Salmon: These silver bullets are known for their acrobatic fights and delicious meat. Typically weighing 3-8 pounds, Cohos are most active in the spring and fall. They're often found closer to the surface, making for some heart-pounding topwater action. Anglers love targeting Cohos for their aggressive strikes and the way they'll tail-walk across the water when hooked.
Chinook (King) Salmon: The crown jewel of Lake Ontario, Chinooks are the largest salmon species in the Great Lakes. These brutes can top 30 pounds and put up a brutal fight that'll test your arms and your gear. They're most abundant from July through September as they stage for their spawning run. Landing a monster King is the ultimate trophy for many Lake Ontario anglers.
Steelhead Trout: If you're after a high-flying, hard-fighting fish, look no further than the steelhead. These chrome-bright rainbows are known for their spectacular aerial displays and blistering runs. They can be caught year-round but are especially active in the cooler months. Steelhead in the 5-15 pound range are common, with some topping 20 pounds.
Brown Trout: Lake Ontario's brown trout fishery is world-class, with fish regularly topping 10 pounds. These wary predators are often found cruising the shallows in spring and fall, making for some exciting near-shore action. Browns are prized for their beautiful spotting and their hard-fighting nature.
Lake Trout: The native giants of Lake Ontario, lake trout can live for decades and grow to massive proportions. While they're typically targeted in deeper water, trophy "lakers" will move shallow in the spring and fall. These powerful fish often require heavy gear and put up a dogged fight all the way to the net.
Whether you're dreaming of battling a trophy King salmon or filling the cooler with tasty Cohos, this 4-hour Lake Ontario charter with Over The Rail Sportfishing is your ticket to an unforgettable day on the water. Captain Justin's local knowledge, top-notch gear, and passion for putting clients on fish make this trip a can't-miss experience for anglers of all skill levels. Let me just say that the waves were choppy and both My Husband and I got motion sickness(bummer, we forgot to take meds for it!) But of course that wasn’t Captain Justin’s fault. He was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. We felt comfortable and right at home! We will definitely be coming back for more and we refuse to be out there with anyone else! Thank you Captain Justin👍

Brown trout are the clever lurkers of Lake Ontario. These golden-brown beauties average 5-10 pounds but can reach 20+. They're often found near shore structures like drop-offs and weed beds. Spring and fall are prime seasons, but summer nights can be hot too. Browns are prized for their wariness and hard fights - fooling a big one is a real accomplishment. Their buttery, orange flesh makes great table fare as well. To target browns, try trolling or casting near shore with stickbaits or spoons that mimic baitfish. A local secret is to fish cloudy days or low-light periods when they're more active. Browns can be particular, so varying your presentation is key. Don't be afraid to go big - trophy browns often prefer larger lures. When you hook one, be ready for some tricky maneuvers as they try to wrap you around structure.

Chinook salmon, or "kings," are the giants of Lake Ontario. These bruisers can top 30 pounds, with 15-20 pounders common. They prefer cool, deep waters but come shallow to feed. Late summer and early fall are prime as they prep for their spawning run. Chinooks are famous for their strong fights - when one hits, hold on tight! Anglers love targeting them for the challenge and their rich, flavorful meat. To find kings, look for bait schools on your fish finder. They often suspend in the thermocline. Downriggers with flashers and cut bait or large spoons are go-to setups. A local tip: troll slower in cold water, faster when it's warm. Keep your drag set light at first - these fish make blistering runs. Landing a trophy Chinook is a real accomplishment and will leave you with sore arms and a big smile.

Coho salmon are a real treat to catch in Lake Ontario. These silver-sided fighters usually run 8-12 pounds, though some can top 20. Look for them in cooler, deeper waters, especially near structure. They're most active in fall as they prepare to spawn, but summer can be hot too. Cohos are known for their acrobatic leaps and hard-fighting spirit - they'll give you a run for your money on light tackle. The meat is bright orange and delicious, making them popular for the dinner table too. To up your odds, try trolling with flashy spoons or cut herring at various depths. These fish have great eyesight, so using attractors like dodgers can really make your lure stand out. When you hook one, hang on tight and enjoy the ride!

Lake trout are the deep-water giants of Ontario. These big, grey-green predators can top 30 pounds, with 10-20 pounders common. They love cold, well-oxygenated depths, often hanging out 50-100 feet down. Spring and fall are prime when they come shallower, but you can catch them year-round. Lakers are known for their powerful, dogged fights - they won't jump, but they'll test your arms. Their rich, oily flesh is great smoked or grilled. To find them, look for underwater humps or drop-offs on your chart. Jigging or trolling with downriggers are go-to methods. Try large spoons, cut bait, or jigs that imitate cisco or alewives. A local tip: glow-in-the-dark lures can be deadly in deep water. When you hook up, be patient - lake trout fights are marathons, not sprints. Landing a big laker is a true trophy and a taste of the Great Lakes' wild history.

Steelhead are the adrenaline junkies of Lake Ontario. These sea-run rainbows average 5-10 pounds but can push 20. They're lightning fast and love to jump, making for an exciting fight. You'll find them in cooler waters, often near tributary mouths or along shoreline drop-offs. Spring and fall are prime seasons when they're running, but you can catch them year-round. Steelhead are prized for their hard-fighting nature and tasty, pink flesh. They can be finicky, so matching your presentation to what they're feeding on is key. Try drifting egg sacs or swinging flies in current seams. A local trick is to use light, nearly invisible fluorocarbon leaders - these fish have sharp eyes and can be leader shy. Whether you're a fly fisher or gear angler, hooking into a chrome-bright steelhead is an experience you won't soon forget.
